Short links for SMS

How to use short links in SMS: saving characters, building trust, custom aliases, turning ads off and counting clicks.

In SMS every character counts. One message holds 160 characters of plain Latin text but only 70 once Georgian letters are included, and longer texts are split into parts. A long URL with UTM tags easily exceeds 100 characters; linkz.ge/sale is 13.

Setup

  1. Create a free account; custom aliases need one.
  2. Optionally add utm_source=sms with the UTM link builder.
  3. Set a readable alias (3-32 Latin letters, digits, _ or -) and avoid look-alike characters.
  4. Untick "Ads and earnings on this link": it is on by default and an ad page hurts trust in SMS.
  5. Send yourself a test SMS on Android and iPhone; if the link is not clickable, add https://.

Trust and tracking

Name your brand in the text, send one link per message and never ask for passwords or card details on the landing page. Create a separate link per send to compare results, since SMS usually passes no referrer. You can change the destination later without resending. See click statistics.
